  • The Walking Dead: Volume 1: Days Gone Bye

5 out of 5 starsUtterly Brilliant. Buy It Now!, - By James Watson Staff Reviewer

When I first picked this up, it was for nothing more than a quick glance to see what all the fuss was about. Naïvely, I was a little put off by the fact that it was in black and white, but then I started reading it. What I found was one of the most brilliant (and most consistently brilliant) comics I had ever encountered. While it might be classed as a horror comic, it’s actually a well-written drama featuring compelling human characters, with human faults and emotions. No one is completely perfect, and no one is infallible.

The main protagonist, Sheriff Rick Grimes is a remarkable character, unlike any other in comics today. When we first meet him, he’s engaged in a shoot out which ends badly, waking up in a hospital bed some time later, he finds he’s left stranded in a zombie-ridden wasteland, and sets out to find his family. What follows is a journey like no other, as Rick finds out the lengths he – and the people he encounters – are willing to go to in order to protect the ones they love.

Be warned, the series is incredibly violent throughout, but it never comes across as gratuitous, although it is always shocking. There are moments of humour, as well as fantastic action scenes, spliced between heartbreaking, poignant drama.

Also, as soon as you’ve finished reading Volume 1, you’ll want to read all of them, so make some space on your shelf and say goodbye to your savings.

This was the top selling graphic novel of 2011 for a reason. It’s brilliant. Believe the hype.
