Daigo Kagemitsu, a servant to a samurai general in the Warring States period, promises body parts of his unborn child to 48 devils in exchange for complete domination of Japan.

Knowing the child to be deficient, Kagemitsu orders the newborn thrown into the river. The baby survives, however!

Calling himself Hyakkimaru, he searches the world for the 48 demons to retrieve his missing parts. Together with a boy thief named Dororo, they travel the countryside, confronting monsters and ghosts time and again.
