Primer is set in the industrial park/suburban tract-home fringes of an unnamed contemporary city where two young engineers, Abe and Aaron, are members of a small group of men who work by day for a large corporation while conducting extracurricular experiments on their own time in a garage. While tweaking their current project, a device that reduces the apparent mass of any object placed inside it by blocking gravitational pull, they accidentally discover that it has some highly unexpected capabilities - capabilities that could enable them to do and to have seemingly anything they want. Taking advantage of this unique opportunity is the first challenge they face. Dealing with the consequences is the next...
Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival, Shane Carruth's excellent debut film is a tremendous example of independent filmmaking on a miniscule budget. Who says you need big bucks to create a great film?

out of 5 starsA surpisingly good low budget sci-fi effort, - By Andrew Ingram (FP) Staff Reviewer
A friend recommended that I watch this, and I'm glad he did because it's the kind of rare gem that you'd never normally think to pick up in a shop (if you can even find it in one).
Superficially, Primer is just another film about time travel (albeit one that takes a more subdued approach), but it is so intricately crafted that it would be very difficult to understand the full events of the film in one viewing. Luckily it's quite a short film (just over an hour) so there's no big investment in seeing it more than once. That being said, I did have to look up explanations (and a handy diagram) on the internet to figure out exactly what was going on (there are 9 timelines).
This isn't a film for those who just want to be entertained, it's aimed at those who enjoy films that provides them with a puzzle at the end and rewards a second viewing.
Highly recommended.
