The 1968 TV episode "Assignment Earth" had been the Season Two finale for the original Star Trek series (the one which saw the Enterprise go back to what was then the present day of the late 1960s and gave us the spectacle of a USAF fighter jet trying to intercept the Enterprise), and was intended by Gene Roddenberry as the pilot for a spin-off series that never came to pass.
