This is a gritty, bleak fantasy. Reading like the diary of a Vietnam War vet, this tale chronicles the ordeals of an elite mercenary outfit, the Black Company. But unlike a lot of fantasy, the protagonists here find themselves fighting not on the side of Good but instead as elite henchman for the forces of Darkness. Violent, harsh but also touching at times, this really is superb high fantasy.
