In my opinion, this stands out as Neil Asher’s finest novel so far. In it, he introduces us to Spatterjay, a planet more hostile than most featured in other SF. Typical to Asher’s writing, this story is fast-paced, gritty and utterly brutal. It also features his signature breed of fauna and flora, itself as hugely inventive and ruthlessly vicious as the tone of his storytelling. This is a proper rollercoaster ride of a book, albeit a rough but not unintelligent one.
