Both sides of an interplanetary conflict are rocked by the discovery of a cosmic superstring. The object collapses into four cylindrical pieces, each about the size of a tube train. Densely packed with alien technology, the pieces are placed for safety on a massively secure space station. There, a female research scientist subsequently falls pregnant, with quads. After giving birth, she commits suicide.

The quads grow up, assuming positions of authority, and one gains control of the awesome hilldiggers, giant space dreadnoughts used in the war, employing weapons capable of creating mountain ranges…
